Week 2: Concepts and Pitch Refinement

With our pitch accepted, our goal for the start of this week was to further refine it and create concept art for our individual assets. Points of critique from the previous week included the following:

  • Implement a visual connection to the shop's branding, such as a shot of the shop itself or an object with the logo.
  • Be mindful of motion blur
  • Find something to appeal to modern audiences alongside those who might have a more direct connection to the 90s skater aesthetic

As mentioned previously, we decided to use set extension to show the shop, and I focused much of the weekend on creating mockups of it. Due to me being in Atlanta instead of Savannah, where we plan to record, I had to work with stock images and pre-existing photos of the Savannah campus while we work to decide our precise filming location.

Skateboard Concept

The concept I landed on involved an aquatic theme in the style of a stained glass window, drawing inspiration Ishod Wair's designs. I was intending to have the shrimp be fully modeled and rigged as opposed to the relatively simple fish, but there has been some disagreement on whether we have time to accomplish that vision.

Sarah suggested turning the shrimp into a series of 2D planes animated on a curve, and the storyboard shows the fish being the focal point of the animation. I would like to compromise by replacing the shrimp with something similar yet simpler, such as a crab, but further discussion would be required.

Upcoming Work

By our next meeting, we should all have the first rough passes of our assets done. For me, that means I must have the fish, flat lobster parts, and some parts of the store blocked out. Time permitting, I would like to also roughly block out the crab as a proof of concept, even if it ends up unused.
